New Audio Equipment

The German company Marian is known amongst audio guys. Marian was also one of the very first, who supported us. For recent studio recordings Marian kindly provided us with one of their latest audio/MIDI system: The Trace ALPHA PCI card. Sampling frequency of up to 192khz, very good audio values and a high resolution. Sounds great, it helps on! Thank you, Marian.

What's going on...

Time for a short update: During the last two weeks we basicly finished the synchronisation in Leipzig but for my part because after only three minutes in the country I got allergies big time. Anyway, the Korg of our chief of sound Tom paid itself, it fits in a suitcase and gives you studio quality.

Gerald is working already on the "3D-Stack", which contains all shots modelled virtually or which require for example the horizon rendered in later. At the moment there are 30 shots between 0.5 and 10 seconds partly with panning or a moving camera. Lots of wood.

Matze is starting with the compositing. There is a "Compositing-Stack": on top go the ready-cut scenes from me as Premiere-project-data and at the bottom the clips pimped and rendered loss-free by Matze come out. By then all flaws (power cords, continuity mistakes etc.) in the pictures are removed, they are colour corrected, some are illuminated artificially, blurs are added if necessary and backgrounds or objects are constructed virtually by Gerald and rendered in. This "Compositing-Stack" consists of pretty much all shots of the movie (ca. 2000 at the moment), since at least a colour correction is always due. That means for the next months any walk in the park is out of the question for Matze :/

Tom is still waiting for a somewhat final raw cut, so he can add the thousands of O-sounds, monologues, dialogues, programmed sounds, atmos and songs he created meanwhile to the timeline. We are dying to see how the raw cut will appear like. What I heard so far is fat as expected.

Martin is beginning to organize the premiere in Leipzig which will take place with the support of the crew of Heil Automobil AG At the same time the movie will go online. As soon as we know a date you will hear from us!

I myself am finishing a few administrative things and then continue with the cutting on which everything depends at the moment- thats why I ask you to excuse me if I am not blogging as much right now.

In June there will be a Route 66-Special in Spiegel Online where we will contribute a relevant part. For that we will publish some new Route 66-material here as well!

Color Correction

One of the last steps of the postproduction lies still ahead: the color correction. This step is essential for "The Last Drug" as the color schemes serve not only the look and feel but also the orientation: That way the different subplots are intuitively recognizable which is crucial for a complex movie of that sort.
For example, the neurology subplot in "The Last Drug" will be provided with a color scheme we were testing with the following pictures:

Lawrence Lessig, "Elvis of Cyberlaw" (WIRED) and founder of Creative Commons calls thousands of hackers to unite in the war against a further radicalization of the copyright on the 23rd Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin.
We put this one hour, standing ovations gaining talk into a 6 minutes clip.

Gonzo Effect: Blinking

You can understand "Gonzo" as a stylistic device aiming to get the viewer into the movie heavily. Even if he is not stoned.
We filmed a part of the Drug (I'm talking about "The Last Drug") from a "Point of View"-perspective: the cam tries to catch the protagonists view. To endorse the "inside his head"-type of feeling, we are working on effects like blinking, heartbeat, breathing and other body functions. Here is a first suggestion for the blinking effect:
